It has been argued that social networks are able to circulate important information, functioning to assist the actor to achieve his or her goals. This positive function would encourage people to construct their own social ties. While researchers have argued that different forms of social circle may generate different functions, the influence of social culture hasn’t been taken into account.

This essay comes to fill this gap by exploring how and why Chinese school masters exercise social capital in the Chinese context. It argues that as Chinese culture values important posts, promotions tend to be the core concern of school masters so that social capital comes to shield personal gain ra- ther than a common good.
