In this chapter the meta- modern approach to education is regarded as a means for transcending the crisis in education and the misfortunes of the modern and post-modern educational paradigms. It is argued that metamodernity gives rise to one’s obligations to self as well as to the institutions’ obligations to learners, as persons and moral citizens.

In this context compassion and responsiveness to students’ and teachers’ needs, at all levels of education, allows the reflective participation of researchers, teachers, parents and students in incidents of change and development through Action research, as an antidote to instrumentality and measurement. Action Research aims at the participatory adaptation of professional development to the learners’ needs in communities of reflective learning at the work environment, which supports participation, openness and responsiveness. The action research paradigm lies at the centre of the meta - modern perspective approach to education and founds its epistemological foundation on the learners’ emancipation interest as it opposes to the instrumental positivistic knowledge. The shift from positivistic approaches to education indicates the shift from modern and postmodern instrumental and chaotic approaches to a meta-modern paradigm that aims to personalize schooling and learning processes; it also indicates the shift from imposed knowledge and prepackaged programs and undifferentiated educational material that face students as marketable products to movements that see education as a process of development of persons with different histories, biographies, and needs.
