Education systems do not fall in place just out of the air, and do not have an incidental structure or nature, but they are the outcome of contextual forces shaping education. Various schemes have been devised to analyse these forces (cf. Wolhuter, 2001), and the one that will be used in this chapter is the one used by Steyn (2014)

whereby the following categories of forces are distinguished:
geographical
demographical
technological
socio-economic
political
religio-philosophical.

While traditionally, in the field of Comparative and International Education, following the footsteps of the triumvirate (or “big three) of Comparative Education, Isaac Kandel, Nicholas Hans and Friedrich Schneider, the unit of analysis has been the nation-state (cf. Wolhuter, 2008), in the current age of globalization and a global village, education systems worldwide find themselves in a challenging and fast changing context, which amounts to nothing short of a crisis. The term “crisis” is derived from the Greek word “κρίσιç”, signifying any event that is, or will lead to an unstable or dangerous situation affecting an individual or a society. The nature and extent of this contextual crisis will be outlined in this chapter. Suffice to state at this state that in his book, The Meaning of the Twenty-First Century, John Martin (2007) makes a case that this century (and the actions taken by human race) will be pivotal for the survival of the human species. This context has thrown education too in an unprecedented crisis, the particulars of which will be thrashed out in the other chapters of this book.
