Crisis in education must necessarily include the crisis of childhood and childrearing. Education varies according to the ages and regions, but it is premised on the existence of children. In almost all societies, parents and families take on the responsibility of nurturing, nursing, and socializing children, and education also encompasses the process of cultural transmission from one generation to the next.

In this chapter, I consider the reproductive strategies focusing on the parental consciousness on childrearing and the demographic transition. In Japan, the childhood and childcare especially have become significant social concerns since the 1990s, related to concern also about rapidly declining birth rates. At the beginning of the 21st century, rapid decline of fertility rates became a common phenomenon in Ease Asia. Therefore, when we examine Japan’s case, focusing on family transformation and parental consciousness on childrearing, we may be able to consider the future era of low fertility societies, and some of the social, economic, political and cultural causes.
