In relevant Hungarian literature one encounters several definitions of the concept of gender. According to one, gender “refers to the social determination acquired and imprinted during socialization, due to which we behave as women and men” (Hadas, 1994:46). That is, the concept embraces all the norms and requirements created by society that are in connection with gender.

Sociological and anthropological research on this topic points to the fact that gender roles (such as masculinity and femininity) depend on social circumstances as well as on childhood socialization. Gender may acquire a positive reading as well, which basically emphasizes the equality of man and woman, and that is the goal it wants to reach in politics as well as education.
